Using hands-on practical learning, our primary school programme challenges learners to think and live in a more sustainable way. The setting at the Urban Sustainability Centre gives learners the opportunity to connect what they learn in the classroom to the urban natural environment and to the town of Swakopmund.
PARTICIPANTS: The Urban Centre welcomes senior primary school learners from grades 5-7. The recommended group size is 25 learners with 2 accompanying adults.
PROGRAMME LENGTH: We offer a 3-day programme, Tuesday to Thursday, 8:00-16:00 daily. Other weekdays or weekends can be arranged based on availability. We are open from early February to mid-December, including school holidays.
WHY BRING LEARNERS TO NaDEET?
• Do you and your learners know how to live sustainably?
• Do your learners know what their impact is on the environment?
• Do you want your learners to be able to put into practice what they learn in your classroom?
PRIMARY SCHOOL PROGRAMME: Our school programme engages learners with both the urban and natural environment. It gives them practical experience in living a sustainable lifestyle while promoting teamwork. Through exploring environmental problems, learners are challenged to develop local solutions. Sample activities: Biodiversity in our Garden; Exploring Namibia and it’s natural resources; EcoHouse activities; climate actions; the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Swakopmund
OUTPUTS: The school programmes focus on four major areas: energy, water, waste, and biodiversity. For each, learners can expect to have a better understanding of the topic and how it relates to their lives and communities. A key output of the Urban Centre programme is to build skills in addressing environmental problems through improved teamwork, cooperation, and leadership in which learners are empowered to take action. All activities are linked to the Namibian school curriculum. This includes most subjects such as English, Maths, Sciences and Life Skills.
COST: NaDEET has an open-door policy allowing our programmes to be accessible to all. We ask participants to contribute as much as they can to the total cost. It includes: programme, educational materials, a light health break and lunch each day. Please inquire with us for updated costs.
